European advantages in biodiversity indexing and infrastructures |
|
| Fauna Europaea will assemble a database of the scientific names and distribution of all living multicellular European land and freshwater animals. |
| Fauna Europaea is an EU funded project, which started in March 2000, aiming at listing European land and freshwater metazoa. This databased list will contain a minimum set of information, including: scientific name, author, date, some important 'synonyms', and the European distribution (up to the Ural, excluding the Caucasus region). To ensure that the work of about 400 specialists, and the 65 Group Coordinators responsible for higher taxa, is well organised and will produce high quality data, advanced procedures for data management and data validating have been elaborated. Overviews of the conceptual and technical data models, and routines for data entering and quality control will be presented. Preliminary outlines of European initiatives for an electronic infrastructure to virtually integrate relevant biodiversity information resources will be shown. |
